Milton Kindergarten

We believe the early years are the most important years

Kindergarten is an exciting time, full of ‘first’ experiences.

At Milton Kindergarten, our teachers adapt to each child’s natural learning style to ensure the best possible start for our youngest students!

Traditionally we think of early learning as being able to read and write but we take it one step further, encouraging our young students to make connections between their new knowledge and their own experiences.

We have created shared writing spaces to help build language skills, and we encourage reading to themselves and others to promote fluency and confidence. Interaction is key to developing self-awareness, empathy and respect for others and most importantly, it is also a lot of fun!

We believe in building friendships! Simple acts such as taking turns, learning to share and problem solving without relying on a teacher, are all important developmental stages for our students.

Our teachers also promote social and emotional growth by setting clear boundaries - we establish a daily routine so that students understand their role in the school day. Our students are introduced to the importance of punctuality, of adhering to the rules of the playground and of being polite and courteous to others. We also make sure that big smiles and lots of laughter are part of every day too!

We recognise that early childhood is a time to develop motor skills such as hand-eye coordination and balance. Active breaks during the day help our students to build strength, improves concentration and promotes a positive, ‘l can do it’ attitude!

We also provide creative activities such as working with clay, craft work with scissors and glue and colouring to develop the finer motor skills required for small or detailed tasks. We have something to suit every child’s needs!

In our post-Covid world, we make sure our little ones understand the importance of personal hygiene . We monitor hand washing before and after snack time and lunch time and we explain why it is important to do daily tasks such as brushing their teeth.

We also encourage healthy eating from their very first day at Milton Kindergarten. We talk about basic nutrition facts such as where our food comes from, the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and the benefits of good food for growing and feeling strong! We want to give everyone the opportunity to have the best possible start in life!

And of course, we also make sure everyone learns their A,B,Cs! We all know that reading, writing and counting are essential life skills and at Milton Kindergarten, we go one step further - we apply our classroom knowledge to the world around us. From counting steps to the classroom and looking for symmetry in nature to learning new words to describe what they see, our little ones are encouraged to ‘learn by doing’.

We also believe no-one is too young to discover Science! We discover how different plants and animals work together to produce our gardens and open spaces and we also we take things apart to see how they work (and we put them back together!) We want to provide a foundation of applied knowledge that will ensure our students’ succeed in the years to come!
