Lets talk about exam results
Dear Members of the MJS Family,
I know that academic success is often viewed as the ultimate measure of success. When it comes to your child’s education, I want you to be assured that we, at Milton Junior School, do everything we can to ensure your child performs to the best of his or her abilities.
However, I also know that exams are not the only measure of success. Children can be intelligent, creative, wonderful human beings without obtaining Grade A in Mathematics or Chemistry!
When your child receives his or her results, I want you to remember the wider context of their education. Yes, top marks are an excellent achievement but there are other ways to achieve success be it in sport, music or the creative arts.
If your child does not get the grades you expected, talk to us. We can discuss the realistic expectations for your child’s academic progression and find ways to work to your child’s strengths, whatever they may be. We believe every child has something to offer – if it’s not through academia, it may be more practical, vocational work that is needed.
When talking to your child about their results, it is important to reassure them. One exam or low mark isn’t always a reflection of their ability and it shouldn’t take away their dreams and aspirations. Doctors, pilots and engineers aren’t the only successful people in this world!
Of course grades are important but I don’t want this to be the only marker of success for Milton Junior School students. I want them to be well-rounded, happy, compassionate individuals with a sense of adventure and curiosity about the world.
As the great Albert Einstein once said “everyone is a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it’s stupid”. Through hard work, determination, discipline and focus, we can help guide our children to their genius!
Very best wishes
