The vision of Milton Junior School is for each child to achieve personal excellence as a valuable member of our global community.
At all stages of learning, we set out to inspire, encourage and empower the children to achieve this vision and to live their lives by the strong values that our school reflects.
Respect – for ourselves, each other, our community, the environment
Milton Junior School, a school, with a large diversity of cultures and backgrounds, is built on a philosophy of inclusion, cooperation and mutual respect for each other as well as an awareness and confidence in ourselves. Our mainstay is to nurture confident, well adjusted, socially responsible young citizens who have respect for, and make the most of, the richly varied environment and community in which they have the privilege to live and learn.
Through involvement in our wider community and the country in which we live, students enhance their learning experience, develop compassion and empathy, and contribute toward the growth and development of the community. Experiential learning encourages our students to develop resilience, independence and teamwork.
Giving life to lessons from the classroom provides a richer contextual reference. Milton Junior School students are encouraged to develop an understanding for the world around them, building skills such as interpersonal communication, cooperation and an understanding for different environments and cultures.
Curiosity – to discover, explore and develop personal interests and strengths
Research suggests that intellectual curiosity has as big an effect on performance as hard work. We recognise that each child is unique with their own individual talents and strengths; we believe that learning is a journey of exploration and discovery. At every stage, we encourage a spirit of curiosity to investigate a subject in greater depth or to try out an entirely new skill. By offering a broad range of subjects and learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom, we encourage our students to explore new and diverse areas and to discover and develop their personal strengths. Individual research and personal discovery are strongly encouraged.
Our small class sizes also enable teachers to give pupils individual attention. This individualised approach to each child’s development encourages enthusiasm for learning with the freedom and confidence to think differently and to aim high.
Independence – to develop self-motivation and purposefulness to learn on an independent basis
At Milton Junior School, we believe that when children enjoy learning, they carry this attribute through to the rest of their lives. A love of learning and the opportunity to expand horizons on an independent basis are encouraged from the early days of creative interaction in Milton Kindergarten through to the academic heights of research projects in Milton Junior School.
Opportunities are provided for students to take ownership of their learning at appropriate levels, encouraging them to experiment, explore and enquire to expand and enhance their knowledge as they grow in confidence and independence. Students are encouraged and empowered to work independently as well as in collaborative groups, whatever their age.
Determination – to strive to achieve
The challenges presented at Milton Junior School through the breadth of opportunities offered, the diversity of activities, as well as the quality of the learning experiences, stretch our students to do their best and to aim high. A sense of determination to achieve personal excellence is instilled in the process of developing character, critical thinking skills and individual talents.
Our personalised approach to learning enables our teachers to match and stretch the individual students at all levels to achieve their best, as we are keenly aware that good academic qualifications contribute to improved career opportunities. We also recognise that high levels of achievement are a collaborative effort and at Milton Junior School, students, staff and parents work closely together in order to achieve exemplary results.
Students are taught to try and try again until they achieve their best – and to take a leadership role in the process. This is true of course for academics but is also applied to all other parts of Milton Junior School life. In the artistic sphere, talented and expert teachers encourage a balance between mastering techniques with the need for self-expression. On the sports field, students compete in team and individual sports to a high level. In extra-curricular activities, students are encouraged to explore new opportunities and even create new Clubs to explore their passions.
