The Benefits of Routines
Dear Members of the MJS Family,
I hope you are all doing well and happy. Please read this article about the values of routines. I strongly recommend you use a routine that suits you and your child. We, the MJS family, can work together to maximise our children’s time for their benefit, success and to help them be good managers and planners of their own life.
At Milton Junior School, we are firm believers in the value of routines!
Routine requires very little conscious thought, freeing our brain to focus on more complex tasks. Daily routines help set our body clocks too e.g. bedtime routines help our bodies to ‘know’ when it’s time to sleep.
Family routines set out how families organise themselves to get things done, spend time together and have fun. They help family members know who should do what, when, in what order and how often.
As a parent, routines can help you feel more organised and in control. This often lowers stress levels, helps your family get through their daily tasks more efficiently and frees up time for other things.
Children’s routines help them develop a sense of responsibility and basic life skills such as time management. When children are able to do parts of the routine with less help or supervision, they also develop independence. Routines can teach younger children healthy habits such as brushing their teeth, exercising, or washing their hands before meals
We have put together some guidance on what we think your child should be including in his/her daily routine and the associated benefits of each. We have also included a draft schedule so that you can see how a daily routine might look for your child.
The best routines are the ones that work for you and your family. Establish times and activities to suit you and then be consistent! Write your routine down and display it clearly where everyone can see it – maybe on a fridge door or on your child’s bedroom door. Monitoring progress and being consistent in ensuring that all tasks are completed daily will ensure that, with time, routines become second nature. This is a valuable way to instil good habits that will contribute to your child’s success in the future.

God Bless and wishing you all a Happy and Prosperous 2023.
Sincerely,
Tony Milton
